Wildlife in Africa

Black faced impalas used to be found in southwest Angola and northwest Namibia and in Etosha national park in Namibia.

Sadly, these animals are endangered and probably extinct in Angola.

The four-toed Elehant Shrew or Sengi is a small insectivorous mammal. It can reach a length of 23 (+tail) and a weight of 250 g.

The Sengi is native to Africa and lives in Congo, Angola, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa.

This animal might be seen in both Lower Zambezi national park and in South Luangwa national park in Zambia.

Chizarira National Park

Chizarira National Park is by some considered the most scenic park in Zimbabwe. But it is very remote and difficult to acess. Unfortunately, the rhino is no longer present, but the other four (elephant, lion, buffalo and leopard), are still here. The Taita Falcon nests in Chizarira and the rare Angola Pitta have been sighted within the Park.

Hwange National Park

Hwange is the largest park in Zimbabwe and one of Africas elephant strongholds. The park covers 14 651 sq. km, borders with Botswana and is close to the Kalahari desert.

Short history:

1930:The hunting grounds of Mzilikazi, a Ndebele king.
1928:Set aside as the Wankie game reserve in Southern Rhodesia.
1930:Becomes a national park.
1932:Opens to visitors.
1982?:Wankie national park becomes Hwange national park.
Wildlife in Hwange

Some mammals: Elephant, lion, hyena, buffalo, jacal, zebra, gifaffe, eland, rhino, cheetah, leopard, wild dog.

Some birds: secretary bird, dark-chanting goshawk, the kori bustard, martial eagle, shaft-tailed whydah;
Outside the Hwange np

Hwange national park is situated in western Zimbabwe next to the Botswana border. Further into Botswana lies Chobe national park.

In the north lies the Matetsti safari area and the Deka safari area.

Kazuma Pan National Park

As the name imply, the park hold several pans that floods in the rainy season. Kazuma Pan is a haven for birds and a home to elephants and buffalos which are present in large numbers.

Victoria Falls National Park

Area at the south and east bank of the Zambezi River at Victoria Falls. The park has a rainforest with trees species not seen elsewhere in this region.

Zambezi National Park

Upstreams Victoria Falls, the park stretches along Zambezi river over 40 km. Home to the big five and a wide variety of other animals. Among others, giraffe and sable antelope.
