Wildlife in Africa

Smaller populations exist in Masai Mara, Kenya, Kazuma Pan, Zimbabwe, Kruger, South Africa and Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda.

********

Desert elephants live in Kaokaland, Namibia (south-west Africa) and in the Gourma district, Mali (west Africa).

These creatures are very well adapted to living in the desert where they move great distances in search for food.

The Gourma elephants are famous for their annual migration.

********

The Abyssinian lion or black maned lion of Ethiopia is known for the beautiful, black mane.

Unfortunately, very few are left in the wild or in Ethiopian game parks.

Today, the population of these smaller sized lions is reduced to less than 1000 individuals.

********

The Cape Quagga, which is a subspecie of the plains zebra, inhabited the Karoo in South Africa as late as the 1860s.

Then it went extinct - it had been ruthlessly hunted to extinction by colonists.

However, efforts are now being made to bring the Quagga back from extintion through selective breeding.

********

The shy sable antelope is found in wooded savannahs from Kenya trough South Africa and Congo.

Kruger NP in South Africa hosts this antelope. So does Zambezi NP in Zimbabwe, Kafue NP in Zambia, Shimba Hills NP in Kenya and Selous in Tanzania.

The giant sable antelope is a subspecies of sable antelope and is native to Angola (Cuango river and Luango river).

********

The african Crowned Eagle is among the largest of african eagles.

The bird delivers a tremendous force using its talons, and can crush a monkeys head.

It is common in tropical Africa from Uganda and Kenya trough Tanzania, Zambia, Congo and Zimbabwe and as far as South Africa.
