Short history:
1921:A partial game reserve is decleared.
1929:The partial game reserve becomes the Serengeti complete game reserve (no hunting).
1930: The Serengeti complete game reserve is downgraded to the Serengeti closed game reserve.
1940: The closed reserve is again upgraded to a "complete reserve".
1951: The Serengeti complete game reserve is decleared a national park.

Outside the Serengeti
Serengeti national park lies in northern Tanzania, along the Kenya / Tanzania border. Just past the border in Kenya, contiguous with the Serengeti lies the Masai Mara game reserve.
Serengeti national park is surrounded by protected areas: In the west lies the Ikorongo and the Grumeti game reserve, in south-east the Ngorongoro conservation area with the Ngorongoro crater.

Huge unbroken caldera (crater) in northern Tanzania. The difference in elevation from the floor to the rim is 400 - 610 m. The Ngorongoro crater borders the Serengeti National park to the west.
