Safari and wilderness areas in South Africa

Northern Cape...
There are several reserves in this part of South Africa. Namaqua National Park is one of them. This park was created in order to protect the wild flowers blooming there.
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is another park in Northern Cape - and a very large one. Originally there where two parks, the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa and
the Gemsbok National Park in Botswana. They were later merged into the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park we know today. This arrangement allows for the free movement of animals and protects the migrating game from poaching.

Eastern Cape...
The last free-roaming lion in eastern Cape was shot before 1860 and the large, black-maned cape lion was made extinct soon thereafter.
Now the lions are back, at least in some game reserves as the Addo Elephant national park.
Addo Elephant national park is home to the big 5, including a substantial number of elephants.
The Mountain Zebra national park was proclaimed back in 1937 to protect the Cape mountain zebra from extinction. In the 1930s less than 100 mountain zebras was left.
There are more individuals around now, but the Cape mountain zebra is still considered a threatened subspecies.

North West...
Pilanesberg game reserve is with 555 sq. km the fourth largest park in south Africa. It is situated in an ancient volcanic crater with the Mankwe Dam at the center. This is big five territory.
The Madikwe Game Reserve is a private reserve, situated along the South Africa / Botswana border. The reserve is much larger than the Pilanesberg game reserve and is big five country as well.

Free State...
The Golden Gate Highlands National Park in the north-eastern Free State is said to be better known for the beauty of its landscape than for its wildlife.

Mpumalanga...
Kruger National Park is the largest game reserve in South Africa. It was originally proclaimed in 1898 to control hunting.
The reserve is part of what will become the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park in the future, a park that will include the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique, the Gonarezhou National Park and the Malipati Safari Area in Zimbabwe.
Kruger National Park lies in the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces of South Africa.
The Sabi Sands game reserve "extends" Kruger national park to the west, and is a collection of several smaller private game reserves. There is no fences between the game reserves or between Sabi Sand and the Kruger national park. This allows for free movement of animals throughout the area.

Limpopo...
Marakele National Park (Originally known as the Kransberg National Park) is situated in Waterberg, Limpopo Province. This park is the home to a large colony of breeding Cape vultures.

Western Cape...
The Wilderness National Park is situated between George and Knysna, in what is known as the Garden Route in Western Cape. The park is a section of the larger Garden Route National Park.
