Lake Nakuru National Park |
Lake Nakuru national park was originally created to protect the flamingoes living there, but is also a rhino sancturary with both black and white rhonos.
Some say Lake Nakuru national park is the best place to observe rhinoceros in Kenya.

Wildlife in Lake Nakuru

Short history:
1960: Lake Nakuru bird sanctuary is created.
1961: Lake Nakuru national park is established.
1968: This year the Lake Nakuru national park is officially gazetted.
1974: The park extends with a northern extension.
1990: Lake Nakuru national park becomes a Ramsar site.

Outside the Amboseli national park
To the north of lake nakuru lies Menengai crater, the largest caldera in Kenya (12 km across/almost 490 m deep, crater summit at 2270 m.).
This volcano is said to be inactive, but was active as late as 1991.
To the north-east lies Aberdare national park then clockwise Longonot national park, Hells Gate national park, Masai Mara national reserve and Lake Bogoria national reserve.
Like Lake Nakuru, Lake Bogoria is an alkaline lake.
