Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park

Tsavo East National Park

This is the largest national park in Kenya and hosts herds of elephants and other wildlife. Tsavo East and Tsavo West are divided into east and west sections by the railway and the road that connects Nairobi with Mombasa.

The Tsavo river flow through the park and the South Kitui national reserve borders Tsavo east.

Short history:

1948:April - Tsavo national park with an area of nearly 22000 sq. km is announced.
1948:May - 1 month later the park is divided into the Tsavo east and the Tsavo west. The dividing line is the Nairobi / Mombasa railway.
1957:Hunting is banned in Tsavo national park.

Wildlife in Africa

The spectacular sitatunga can be found in central Africa, where it live in swamps and marshes throughout the area.

It is a very good swimmer and is sometimes called a "true amphibious antelope".

The blue wildebeest thrives in the savannas of southern and eastern Africa. Best known are the wildebeests of the Serengeti, Tanzania.

More than one million animals take part in an annual, large migration between Masai Mara, Kenya and Serengeti, Tanzania.

As with many species in southern Africa, the bontebok antelope nearly became extinct due to excessive hunting in the 1800s.

Today the situation has changed and bonteboks are found in protected areas in Cape, South Africa.

The nocturnal african Civet is a small doglike mammal, common in forests and grasslands in central Arica, eastern Africa and southern Africa.

It preys on beetles, rodents and reptiles and eats wild fruits and vegetables.
