Amboseli National Reserve |
The name Amboseli comes from the word empusel, which is a maasai word meaning "salty dust".
It is a fitting name on the dusty plain beneath mt. Kilimanjaro, and the perfect viewpoint for photograpers.
The wilderness of Amboseli is a very popular safari destination and is among the most visited reserves in Kenya.

Wildlife in Amboseli
Some mammals: Elephant, dik-dik, buffalo, zebra, hippopotamus, hyena, lepard, jackal, impala, giraffe, waterbuck, warthog thomsons gazelle, baboon.
Some birds: African fish eagle, ibis, secretarybird, crowned crane, kingfisher, pigmy falcon, ostrich, goliath heron, white-baked vulture, egyptian goose.
Some reptiles: Tortoise, several snake species as cobra and black mamba.

Short history:
1948:An area in the maasai region Empusel becomes the Amboseli national reserve.
1974:Amboseli national reserve is decleared a national park
2005:Amboseli national park is "degazzetted" and is no longer a national park, but a national reserve again.
Outside the Amboseli national park
Amboseli national reserve lies north-west of mt. Kilimanjaro and along the Kenya / Tanzania border, Just over the border - in Tanzania - lies the Kilimanjaro National Park.
The Amboseli reserve is part of a much larger area - the Amboseli ecosystem which cover an area of about 3000 sq. km. Further to the east, along the Kenya / Tanzania border, we find the Tsavo national park.
