South Luangwa National Park

South Luangwa National Park covers an area of 9050 sq kilometers and is regarded as one of the most exciting game reserves in Africa, even in the world. It is said that over 400 bird species and 60 different animal species lives here, among them Thornicroft's Giraffe which is unique to Luangwa valley. This park is situated along the Luangwa river and is home to a variety of blossoming trees and exotic flowers. The well known Nsefu game reserve (1000 sq. km) is part of South Luangwa National Park.

Wildlife in South Luangwa

The South Luangwa natinal park teems with wildlife. Most species are known from other locations in Africa, but there are a few that are endemic to the Luangwa valley. Namely the Thornicrofts giraffe and the Cooksons Wildebeest. The Crayshaws Zebra and the Puku antelope are also found here in South luangwa.

Leopards is not uncommon in South Luangwa np, in fact rumors says that this area has the highest concentration of leopards in Africa.

The floodplains of Luangwa, the lagoons and the savannah and mopane woodlands hosts many other species as well.

Some mammals: Elephant, hippo, lion, hyena, wild dog, jackal, caracal, baboon, getnet, buffalo, common duiker,

Some birds: yellow bill stork, Goliath heron, Ibis, tropical boubou, fish eagle, crested cranes and long-tailed starlings.

Some reptiles: nile crocodile, nile varan

Outside the South Luangwa national park

National parks in Zambia are bordered by buffer zones, called game management areas. Around the South Luangwa np there are five such areas: Lumimba, Lupande, Munyamadzi, Sandwe and Chosomo.

Lumimba gma lies to the north-east of South Luangwa and is also bordering Luambe and Lukusuzi nps. The gma covers an area of 4500 sq km and is situated at an altitude of apr. 740 m above sea level. Remote Africa safaris Tafika Safari Camp is placed here on the edge to South Luangwa np.

Lupande gma is found to the south of Lumimba and to the east of South Luangwa np. Several safari companies which operate in South Luangwa np have their safari lodges in this area which is more than 4800 sq km large.

Munyamadzi gma borders both South Luangwa np and North Luangwa np, South Luangwa to the south. This safari area is 3300 sq km large.

To the south of South Luangwa np lies Sandwe area which is the smallest gma bordering South Luangwa np, only 1530 sq km.

Chisomo gma lies to the south-west of South Luangwa and measures 3390 sq. km
