The endangered Cape dwarf chameleon is native to South Africa.
This specie is one of 15 dwarf chameleon species found in South Africa.
Chameleons have the ability to catch insects by using their tongue, even if the insect is some distance away.

The very rare hirola or "four-eyed antelope" live in the grassy plains of north-eastern Kenya.
This antelope is critically endangered as very few animals are left.

Jerboas are small, nocturnal mouselike rodents with long hind legs - much like a kangaroo.
3 of several subspecies reside in the dry deserts of northern Africa.

These antelopes resides in floodplains and other wet areas.

Lions live in family groups called prides and are the largest cats in Africa with a weight that in some cases exceeds 250 kg.
They are predators and inhabit grassland and savannah.

The Mongalla gazelle appears like a lightweight version of the Thomson gazelle, beeing slightly smaller (diff. 4kg/6cm).
It lives on open plains and is active during the morning.

Parks and reserves along the Great North Road
The Great North Road is the Zambian section of the "Cape to Cairo Road" envisioned by Rhodes and others back in the 1890s. The Cape to Cairo road is, like The Cape to Cairo Railway, an uncompleted project. However, sections of the road exist, like the Great North Road in Zambia.

Isangano National Park |

Kasanka National Park |
Kasanka national park consist of woodland, evergreen forests, swamp forests, rivers and lakes in northern Zambia. This area, which became a national park in 1942, has many different habitats in a relatively small area and quite a few endangered species finds a protected home here.

The lodge is a convenient base for exploring the Eastern half of the park

Lavushi Manda National Park |
Lavushi Manda national park lies on the slopes of the Lavushi Mountain and extends up to over 1550 m above sea level, that is, the eastern part of the park.
This area is an untouched wilderness of woodlands, rocky hills and mountains. Streams and waterfalls empties themselves into the Lulimala, Lukulu and Lumbatwa rivers. finally the water ends up at the Bangweulu floodplains.

Bangweulu floodplains GMA |
Aprox. 50 kms north of Kasanka National Park in northeastern Zambia are the vast Bangweulu floodplains. The lake, the huge swamps and the seasonlly flooded grass plains make a huge 11 000 sq. km large haven to birds and animals.
The rare Shoebill Stork lives here and so does the black Lechwe, the sitatunga, the reedbuck, the tsessebe and many others - except for the lion.
The waters of Bangweulu, fluctuates with the rainy season and is drained by the Luapula river which is part of the Congo River system.

Shoebill Island Camp is situated 70 kms north of Kasanka N.P. on the edge of
the huge Bangweulu wetlands. This areas offers dramatic viewing of Black
Lechwe (over 100,000) Tsessebe and other less often seen animals. It is
however the birdlife, especially Shoebills that attract most visitors.
Accommodation is in ensuite safari tents and reed huts and offers fully
inclusive stays or camping at the campsite.
